Arts and Writing Festival Big Hit with Community!

Rosanna Golf Links Primary School recently held its ‘2022 Arts and Writing Festival’ to celebrate student creativity and showcase the artistic and writing talent of all students in the school.

The festival was a huge hit with the community and was attended by hundreds of people throughout the week-long event.

Every child in the school had an original piece of writing and an unique artwork on display at the festival, based on the theme ‘Old World’s, New Worlds, Other Worlds.’  Art pieces were created during weekly art lessons with the school’s Art Specialist, Lauren Scott. Writing pieces were developed over several weeks in classrooms.

The event was launched with an Opening Ceremony on Monday September 5th by visiting author Maria la Selva. As the author of the wellbeing focused picture book, ‘Perky Panda Asks If You Are OK?’, Maria was keen to be a part of the event to celebrate student imagination and creativity. Maria was also keen to communicate a message around looking after each other and the ways children can manage their own wellbeing.

Throughout Arts and Writing Festival week, all classes participated in Author Talks or Writing Workshops with published authors, including Sue de Gennaro, Davina Bell, Andrew McDonald, and Maria la Selva. Students learnt how to create strong characters, how to develop their ideas and the lengthy process involved in publishing a book.

Literacy Leader and Festival Coordinator Kerron Worsdell explained:

‘At Golf Links, we want to give all children the chance to shine. This festival was an opportunity for children who are talented writers or highly creative a chance to share what they can do with an appreciative audience. It was also a fantastic way to bring our school community together again to celebrate learning! Seeing their peers work on display and hearing from published authors has inspired and excited kids about creating their own stories and art, which is amazing!’

The school plans to hold the event every two years and alternate with a STEM based event during 2023.
