Kotodama Exhibition

Kotodama, image by Avan Anwar and Junko Azukawa.

Kotodama means ‘word spirit’ in Japanese. It refers to the belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names.

This exhibition is a collaboration between a Japanese ink artist and a Kurdish visual artist who have very different cultural and linguistic backgrounds but have found they have the same value and respect for the spirit and energy held in words.

In Kurdish culture, words are mystical tools used in poems to evoke a significant power and impact on people’s emotions.
