The Disappearing Act
THE DISAPPEARING ACT is a one woman show written and produced by Maria Angelico, co-directing with Declan |Fay. Inspired by Maria Angelico’s true story of her father who was a well-known Magician whose best disappearing act was when she was born. The show will be performed at the Playbox, Malthouse Theatre from April 12 – 24 for this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Familiar to us on Australian and international screens Maria is known for her leading role in Netflix series Sisters and The Inbestigators, most recently in the highly received award winning ABC series The Newsreader, Retrograde and New Gold Mountain for SBS. She played the key role in Netflix ABC six-part miniseries Stateless, starring and executive produced by Cate Blanchett. Multi skilled, Maria is busy behind the lens, too. She has her own TV series in development with Lucy Durack and Imogen Banks. Her own creation web series, Movement, was screened at Tribeca Film Festival. She’s popular on the voiceover circuit too, in Australia and US markets, she’s the voice of the Winter Queen in World of Warcraft, Shadowland amongst others.
Angelico says “being the daughter of a late Cabaret artist and an absent and emotionally abusive Magician was always something I never felt ready to share about because of the sheer pain and whacky nature of it. It was much easier to suppress and not correct people who misheard me, thinking I said my father was a musician not a magician. However, in 2019 I found myself at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles on the verge of a panic attack and realised that my anxiety was not due to magician issues but my father issues. And now having had space and time to process it in lockdown, I am ready to share the tragic, hilarious, and beautiful story of this part of my life. The story I was literally born to tell.” Marie adds: “I want the show to be a hilarious celebration of the resilience, strength and capability of women who have spent their lives in the shadows of men. The women who have been put in boxes.”
